The Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) Fellowship 2025 is a six-month opportunity for people who have completed their PhD to do research in Japan. Japan is an excellent place for students, whether they’re studying for an undergraduate or graduate degree. Fellowship holders can do research in any field, but those in natural science, engineering, and medicine will be given preference.
This program offers an exceptional opportunity for PhD holders to do research in Japan, surrounded by a supportive community of fellow researchers. Participants can also explore Japan during their research period. The MIF fellowship covers all expenses, including flights, meals, accommodation, and a monthly stipend for living costs.

Eligibility Criteria of Matsumae International Foundation Fellowship 2025:
- Applicants of any non-Japanese nationality are eligible for the Japanese fellowship.
- The Matsumae International Foundation Fellowship program is open to Ph.D. degree holders.
- All applicants must be 45 years old or younger at the time of applying for the research fellowship, meaning they should have been born in 1979 or later.
- Prior to applying, applicants must obtain an acceptance letter from a Host Institution in Japan.
- Proficiency in either English or Japanese language is a must for the Matsumae fellowship.
- Applicants must not have previously resided or worked in Japan.
- The applicants must hold jobs in their home country and intend to return after completing the fellowship to contribute to their country’s development.
- Preferred research fields include natural sciences, medicine, and engineering.

Screening Process: The MIF Screening Committee will evaluate applications, focusing on the educational value and thoroughness of the research projects. The results will be posted on the MIF website in late November 2024.
- Successful applicants will receive a grant letter from the MIF.
- Please note that the MIF maintains a confidentiality policy regarding Screening Committee discussions and does not accept inquiries about individual applications. Additionally, the MIF will not provide reasons for the Screening Committee’s decisions.
