MADRE Internship Program Overview

MADRE was founded in 1983 to help women in different ways, like stopping violence against them, supporting them in dealing with climate change, and helping them during wars. They have internships available three times a year: in the summer, Winter, and spring.

However, the internships can vary in length and the kind of work you do, depending on what’s available. You might apply for campaigner, executive assistant, or program coordinator positions. These internships are in New York City, and you need permission to work in the US because this internship program can’t help with visas for interns from outside the US.

MADRE Internship Fields

Here are some fields of Internship with the skills that interns can learn during the MADRE Internship Program:

Communications Intern

In this field, the intern will learn the following skills:

• Monitoring international news reports related to MADRE program areas and partnerships;

• Helping with creating and editing audio and video content;

• Administering in making content, creating and producing MADRE print materials and newsletters;

• Assisting with e-transmissions to MADRE’s membership;

• Executing research and framing content for MADRE’s website;

• Administering with social networking industries;

• Delivering research service as needed;

• Assisting with event planning and outreach.

Human Rights Program Intern

Interns will have a chance to learn practical skills of:

• Performing research and assembling reports on issues related to MADRE’s thematic initiatives:1) Rape as a Weapon of War; 2) Climate Justice and Gender Justice; 3) Sexual Rights;

• Expanding monitoring and evaluation frameworks, data collection tools, and processing information received from associates;

• Observing UN controversies and strategies on issues related to MADRE’s work;

• Delivering support with programmatic updates, highlights, and reports to donors;

• Providing executive and logistics help to Program Staff.

Human Rights Legal Advocacy Intern

Interns will learn the following practical skills:

• Illustrating MADRE at conferences and in teamwork with other NGOs and UN contacts;

• Tracking and participating in UN strategies, such as the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) and others, as needed;

• Drafting, editing, and introducing notations, reports, and testimony to UN human rights bodies, as needed;

• Doing investigation for magazines and program work on gender dimensions of women’s health and violence against women and peacebuilding and women’s political participation;

• Cooperating with MADRE Program and Human Rights Advocacy staff.

MADRE Internship Requirements

To get an Internship, the applicant must meet the following requirements: as

• Intern must have knowledge and experience in gender and human rights issues.

• Applicant must have strong analytical, writing, and communications skills and excellent organizational skills.

• Candidate must have full Spanish proficiency (reading, writing, and speaking).

• A full Knowledge and experience in monitoring and evaluation for nonprofits is required.

• Interns must have the ability to be flexible and to work independently yet in close coordination with peers and supervisors.

Human Rights Legal Advocacy Internship Requirements

• Applicant must have the ability to work in a multicultural team environment.

• Interns must have a bachelor’s and Master’s degree in communications, social research, sociology, human rights, public policy, public health, or a related discipline.

• Candidates must have at least five (5) years of relevant experience in program/project design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, quantitative and qualitative research methods, and writing assessment reports.

• Interns must have familiarity and experience with the Monitoring and evaluation (M&E) framework and performance indicators of the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL). Previous experience with a DRL final project evaluation is also necessary.

• Interns must have an in-depth knowledge of gender issues, the impact of gender-based crimes, LGBTQ+ rights, women’s rights, and ISIL crimes.

• Oral and written English proficiency is required; proficiency in Arabic would be essential.

Application Process for MADRE Internship

The application process for the Internship is straightforward. However, some steps may guide you through the application procedure. Such as

• Go to the official website of the MADRE Internship and find out whether you are eligible for this program.

• Download the application form and fill it out according to the information.

• Attach all documents in the required file and submit it with the application.

• After a few days, the selected candidate will be informed via email about their application submission.

• Finally, selected candidates will be able to get hands-on experience with MADRE.

Application Period

1. First Semester in the summer from June to August

2. Second Semester in the  fall from September to December, 

3. Third  Semester in spring, from January to May

However,  you need to apply before the 15th of March for the summer session, the 15th of July for the fall session, and the 15th of November for the spring session.
